¡Hola!
For this week, you are going to learn about the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for “Fifth of May”. This is a holiday honoring the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. This holiday celebrates Mexico’s courage and strength to revolt against the French, and eventually get them out of their country.
The holiday has actually become more popular in the United States than in Mexico as a day to celebrate Mexican-American culture and pride. People eat delicious Mexican food, listen to Mariachi bands, perform traditional Mexican dances, and share other special customs on this day. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades or battle reenactments.
Activity
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, choose one of the Cinco de Mayo activities below. Color la bandera de México (Mexico’s flag) verde (green), blanca (white), and roja (red). Design your own Cinco de Mayo piñata. What would it look like? What colors would it be? Use your imagination. Then check out some of the links below for stories, songs, traditional dances, and coloring sheets related to the holiday.
Gracias,
